Narrative Account:
Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
Piece that shows evidence of the writing process
1st 9 Weeks
Critical Response/Review of a Poem:
Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
Analyze and evaluate bias, hidden messages, emotional factors, propaganda, figurative language, allusion, irony, symbolism, and theme; analyze and evaluate the underlying assumptions of the author/creator.
2nd 9 Weeks
Research Product: includes evidence of all 6 steps of the writing process in a research paper using standard MLA style**.
Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
Content Specific piece.
Product should be typed.
Product should show evidence of all stages of MLA style and 4 to 7 credible sources (from multiple print and digital sources).
3rd 9 Weeks
Literary Reflection:
Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research and write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
Judges the effectiveness of the author’s tone, style and use of language
Interprets how personal circumstances and experiences shape interaction with text.
4th 9 Weeks
Mid-year check will take place on the writing within a working portfolio (i.e.: writing notebook). The end-of-year check will take place on student selected work placed within the official writing portfolio folder. Final portfolio check to be completed before EOG Testing.
All products should show evidence of various stages of the writing process (planning, drafting, conferencing, revising, editing, and closure/publishing).
Content Specific: Science, Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, Art, and/or Music.
See Writing Instructional Guide for further clarification. You should produce multiple examples of the above products throughout the year. Choose one from each product area to include in the students’ final portfolios.
Products may be done using various multi-media resources such as podcasts, Power-Point, web page publications, etc. The FINAL product in the writing portfolio needs to be hand-written or typed in an essay format.
Spelling Inventory should be completed quarterly and placed in writing portfolio.
